Free Rice!

There is another really super website called Freerice.com. It asks you vocabulary questions then gives you choices for what that word means. Every word you get right give 20 grains of rice to a hungry child through the United Nations Program. Also, if you click on "change subject" up in the top right corner, you can do math problems, Spanish words, and even identify paintings! It's really fun, and you can help a kid in need!

Flickr!

There is an awesome website called Flickr! On it, you can type in whatever you want and it will find pictures of those letters to spell the words! It's really cool. To get to it, go to ps116.org and go to Kathleen's Favorite Fun Websites. Then click on  "Spell with Flickr!" and type in something. If you don't want to do all that, here's the link:

Student Council

Most kids that are in 3rd grade, 2nd grade ,1st grade, and kindergarten don't know about student council. Student Council is really helpful to the school, and they work hard to try to fix genaral problems. So if you would like to have the student council discuss something, tell your teacher and they can contact us!!! Oh, and sorry younger grades, 4th and 5th graders are only allowed to do it. :(. But, at least you have something to look forward to!!!

Awesome.. Out of this world.. School Apparel

116 has an OUT OF THIS WORLD online shop. They even have a new section with books that your teacher reccomends on Amazon. On the Cafe Press part, they have 116 hoodies, stuffed animals, stickers, back backs, tote bags, and even shirts for DOGS!! :-) The coolest thing about these shops are that a lot of the proceeds from the things you buy go to 116!!! So encourage your parents to go holiday shopping at the 116 school shop all you 116-ers!!! Happy Shopping!!!

mr.grumpy the great

Hello fifth graders!
You remember the field trip last monday? From your overall field trip experience you know the bus driver is usually nice.Right? Well, when going to school from the zoo, Ms.Morque class got an unusually grumpy bus driver. At one point he stopped the bus and told us to be quiet! Even Ms.Morque said he was grumpy and that we were doing great on the bus.

Seneca village

Today Michele's class went on a class trip to Central Park! For a nice relaxing walk in the park? No! To learn about the not so famous Seneca Village. It was a village for freed blacks, Irish and German immigrants, a nice integrated mix that wanted to get a way from the busy and crowded down town Manhattan. So those people made there own village called Seneca Village. I think that this field trip was very informational. The only part why they don't live there any more is because the other people who lived on lower Manhattan wanted a nice park exactly where Seneca Village was. So this case went to the Supreme Court. And the poor Seneca Village got razed, because they lost the trial. And, this is how we got our Central Park...

Write about a barrier

Write About a Barrier
By Sam

Have you ever faced a barrier in your life? You know, someone in your family dying, your parents going through a divorce, being overweight etc. Well, if you have, you now have a chance to express your feelings about it. Scholastic is holding an essay contest for 4-8th graders where you have to write an essay about any barriers you've faced, and how you've overcome them. They will be celebrating the anniversary of Jackie Robinson, a baseball-player who broke the color barrier in baseball in 1947. In your essay, you should show how you were able to overcome your barrier by using at least one of Jackie Robinson's nine values. These values are courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence. Here are some more things you should know when writing your essay:

  • Include your name, grade, your teacher's name, your school's name, and the city and state where your school is located.
  • Your essay should be at least 200 words long and not more than 700 words long.
  • After you finish the essay, mail it to:

Breaking Barriers Essay Contest

Scholastic Inc.

P.O. Box 713

New York, NY 10013-0713

  • If your essay wins first place, you can win a trip to the 2008 Major League baseball All-Star game in NY, a laptop for both you and your teacher, a visit from Jackie Robinson's daughter, and her book "Promises To Keep". Your essay should be sent to Scholastic Inc. by March 1st, 2008.

Now that you know about the contest, start thinking about a barrier you've faced. Remember, don't try to make up a barrier, because if you do your essay will be disqualified, and you won't have a chance at winning all those prizes.

Franny's thoughts #10

Ms. A is really nice, but for kids in Grade 5 we want to talk to kids!!!!! Sure, we have Student Counsel, but what about the little things, like a second grader cursed at you in yard today, or your parents won't stop fighting?? Maybe we should have a kids therapy group, and not just for 5th graders. I think this would help a lot of kids in this school. Any other ideas? Suggestions via comments!

Franny's thoughts #9

Spotlight is doing a really good job so far, but what happened to the reader's voice?! If you want a section in the newspaper focusing on poetry or sports, or math(speaking to Demos here), tell me! Suggestions(for sections) via comments!

Clothes Crisis!

A lot of people are wearing mohawk hats! WHAT'S THE DEAL?! At first it was funny but now it is so annoying! So if you are trying to make a fashion statement, we hear you! JUST STOP THE HATS!

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Franny's thoughts #8: Reward Big Time!

I heard that Chancellor Klein rewarded all Nyc public schools grade A 30$ per student!!!!!!!! YAY! HOORAY! come on, cheer! How should Ms. Hsu and Mr. Chevall spend it? Spend spring break in Hawaii? Give us a swimming pool? A feast{please?} Better cafeteria? What do YOU think? Suggestions via comments!

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

franny's thoughts #7

About sleeping later, it sound like a good idea, but how would we make up for the extra half hour?? Kidsclub would lose a lot of money with kids staying later. What can we do???!!! suggestions via comments, as usual!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lets sleep later!

Don't you wish we could sleep later! I do! I really want school to start at about... maybe... 9:00!!! Wouldn't that be great good!

Volunteering

You want to warm other people's heart by doing a little volunteer work? Well, now you can. Ms. Morque's class is going to be doing a lot of it. Like we just went to a roller hockey tournament for Special Olympics and did arts and crafts. We sponsored a coat drive in our classroom too. You can help too. Just look up volunteer work and you will find something that you can do in a couple of weeks or months. Have you helped? Leave your comments here about places kids can volunteer.

Special Olympics

Do you have a family member or a friend with a disability? Well it may be a sad thing but there is a bright side! There is a tournament for kids and adults with disabilities and they get to play fun games but they are made easier so they can play! 5-405 went to one of the tournaments and they had a section where the the kids and the adults would come over and make crafts. When I did this I felt really good inside. Because I helped someone who cant do as many things as I can. But hey you can help! You can volunteer too! You can bring in a idea for a craft set it up, and sign up for it so you can let people with disabilities make the craft of your idea!
hey please respond and say what you did to help the world! YA!

wii

Have u heard about the wii? Well it is a cool game system for your tv! You get to have cool cute characters that u get to play with! You can chose how your character looks! Funny, crazy, or cool! its like your own little world on tv! So go have fun on the wii!

Franny's thoughts #6

Our school is cool, but..........
Creativity. Lincoln Center is the best but we need more imagination during the school day! Lincoln Center is great, but could the fifth graders, for instance, do more creative writing? Also, my brother complains about needing more time to run around. I'm sure there are lots of kids who agree. Franny, out!
Spotlight's first issue for this school year is out! So, how was it? Send feedback via comments for this post. Yee-haw! See you! Or e-mail you. Does that sound good......?

Happy 0'8

Welcome back!!!!!!!!!!! How was your new year? Did you see the ball drop, do you have any special tradition you celebrate? Comment on this. 0'8 will be great!!!!!!!!!

Happy New Year!

It is now 2008 and there's so much to do! Well, good fortune, actually fulfill your resolutions and happy '08!
