Write about a barrier

Write About a Barrier
By Sam

Have you ever faced a barrier in your life? You know, someone in your family dying, your parents going through a divorce, being overweight etc. Well, if you have, you now have a chance to express your feelings about it. Scholastic is holding an essay contest for 4-8th graders where you have to write an essay about any barriers you've faced, and how you've overcome them. They will be celebrating the anniversary of Jackie Robinson, a baseball-player who broke the color barrier in baseball in 1947. In your essay, you should show how you were able to overcome your barrier by using at least one of Jackie Robinson's nine values. These values are courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence. Here are some more things you should know when writing your essay:

  • Include your name, grade, your teacher's name, your school's name, and the city and state where your school is located.
  • Your essay should be at least 200 words long and not more than 700 words long.
  • After you finish the essay, mail it to:

Breaking Barriers Essay Contest

Scholastic Inc.

P.O. Box 713

New York, NY 10013-0713

  • If your essay wins first place, you can win a trip to the 2008 Major League baseball All-Star game in NY, a laptop for both you and your teacher, a visit from Jackie Robinson's daughter, and her book "Promises To Keep". Your essay should be sent to Scholastic Inc. by March 1st, 2008.

Now that you know about the contest, start thinking about a barrier you've faced. Remember, don't try to make up a barrier, because if you do your essay will be disqualified, and you won't have a chance at winning all those prizes.
